MEMA DESIGN LAMPS

Johannesburg based Sian Eliot and Ari Geva founded Mema designs in 2013. It was a common fascination with a lightweight, corrosive resistant metal fabric made from thousands of 0.2mm metal wires that led them on this journey that resulted in the beautiful Ukhamba lamps that were launched in February 2015.

This long creative process was made possible by the fact that they get on well together, creating custom tools, jigs and prototypes while playing with the light which danced through and within the net. They are now moving on to make large scale interactive light art sculptures.

I had had brief conversations with Sian and knew that she was working on something new, but did not have much detail - however knowing her, I knew it would be something different and beautiful

What took my breath away when I first saw the lights at Design Indaba was the softness and simplicity – they looked like they were made from sheer fabric. They were timeless and elegant and brought to mind Audrey Hepburn and the elegance of that era, but were very relevant in to-day’s context.

It always excites me when I encounter something so new and fresh and also know that this product will have a global appeal and has the potential to be another showcase for the amazing design talent we have in South Africa.
